Lake Placid Ladies Only Clinic Oct. 3rd

    by Maria Stuber

On Saturday, Lindsey Dehlin and I conducted a ski clinic for a group of female skiers in the Lake Placid area. This was a mixed group of experienced and novice skiers. All of the women who attended were very enthusiastic and excited to improve their skiing technique. We did all dry-land work, both classic and skate technique. Surprisingly, most skiers at the clinic preferred to classic ski instead of skate. This is very unusual in the recreational skiing world these days, but it was a refreshing change.

Thank you very much to Elizabeth Trachte who did most of the organizing for the clinic. She is a Lake Placid skier with Wisconsin roots. I met Elizabeth through my Ski and Tea connections so I owe them a big thank you as well.

Lake Placid, NY – Oct 3

Every year top US skiers come to the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center to train together and prepare for the upcoming competition season.  The opportunity to come to Lake Placid presents a quality training environment and the chance to witness how many of the other top skiers are preparing for the upcoming season.

A major focus for us in Lake Placid is getting in quality intensity training on uphill grades and the Lake Placid area offers potential for both rollerski and dryland.

We had a distance training session today in between more intense days, so many of the athletes chose a more general mode of training and went for a run and hike.  It made sense to take advantage of the great hiking here in the heart of the Adirondack mountains.  We decided to ascend Whiteface Mtn where the 1980 Olympic Alpine events were held and its summit road will once again host the rollerski hill climb to be held next Wednesday morning.

    Lake Placid

We arived in Lake Placid New York this Monday to begin a training camp with skiers from all around the country.  A handful of people flew out here but the rest of the team made the long drive east through Canada.   It is sufficient to say we were very happy to finally arrive at the Olympic Training Center.

The 10 days we are out here are going to prove highly demanding.   The facitities here are amazing and will help a lot to speed recovery.  Everyone is staying a domitories that are attached to a cafeteria, weight room, gym and the like.  With all our needs in such close proximity training can be optimized.DSCN1596DSCN1599

Fall is definitely well underway in Lake Placid.  It has been cold and rainy the past three days with the occasional snow flake.  A little white even covers some of the higher peaks.  It really makes it feel like ski season is close at hand as winter tights and jackets are being worn at practice.  The cold makes intervals nice.  Yesterday we blew out the carbon with 6 x 5 min level 4 up hill intervals.  It was definitely one of the harder workouts this year.  It felt good though and everyone looked strong.

Hopefully we will get some training pictures up so check back soon.
