I picked up a few new pairs of 2011 Salomon skis this year while I was racing in Europe.  They are awesome.  Chuck, you have to try this wet klister ski.

Mark has a really slick system to flex the pockets of each ski.  I mark each ski the same to help speed up the process of how best to wax them.

    Mark and the Mantec

Mark and Nordic Ultratune help me manage my ski fleet each year.  Mark does some of the best stone grinds in the world including many skis that were used in Vancouver in February.  The Ultratune shop is a ski technicians dream and I could and do spend a lot of time in there.  You can tell Mark is an engineer; everything is very organized and exact.

I spent the morning using feeler gauges to mark the kick pockets on my new skis.  After fresh grinds they will be ready to go for the 2010/11 race season. It was pretty entertaining to watch the stone grinding process and how excited Mark would get when each grind came out.  Each time he would bring the ski over to me to show how nice it looked, just like a proud father.  Mark is way in to it and a great guy to have working with your skis.

    Sten Kaeding, you’re toast!!

    By Gus Kaeding
    Hello all,
This is my first blog post as a CXC Elite Team Vertical Limit coach as opposed to an athlete and I am fired up! Last summer I went to a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game with Steinbock’s Chris Cook and in the midst of having an ahem, good time I signed up for a cruise giveaway. Nearly three weeks later I had forgotten all about it when I received a phone call for Ceptor (my long time video game alias). I was informed that I had indeed won an all expenses (airfare included) cruise from Miami to the Bahamas. After a rigorous and cut throat competition to decide whom my companion would be, no clear winner emerged. I decided to turn the trip into what has since been dubbed a “bromance” and took C. Cook along for the ride. Fast forward to the cruise (this April) to add ski relevance to the story. It so happened I was able to use my time on the boat to consider becoming a CXC coach. Somewhere in between the mid day belly flop contest and bingo on the second day, I decided it was something I really wanted to pursue.
Since that moment has basically been a whirlwind of change. Between getting acclimated to the coaching role, Fish leaving for the US Ski Team, and the Red Sox forgetting how to play baseball, my life has been a mess.
Our first camp went off in early May and was uneventful (except for Fish’s announcement). We had a few good training sessions and kicked off what is going to be a very promising year for CXC. Since then I have been in Marquette moving stuff in between my storage unit and the house in which I am currently squatting. Moving is my lease favorite thing ever and sometimes I think I’d be better off if my storage unit went up in smoke. I am just beginning to approach acceptable levels of organization.
Anyway, on to the meat of the post, the important stuff. Sten Kaeding is my younger brother. In fact, 6 years to the day younger. This punk claims he can bench press 195 lbs which happens to be the most I’ve ever put up. Any older brother knows that this is absolutely unacceptable. Since a coaching strength plan can be vastly different from that of an athlete I have been prepping to destroy him. To embarrass him. What better way than in a public forum? So here it is Sten, first brother to 225 lbs wins respect. My alarm is set for 6 am, I’m ready, are you?
Next up on the CXC docket will be a camp scheduled in Stillwater, MN from June 7-17. Check back in on that as be bring summer training into high gear! Below are some pics from random spring goings ons. Enjoy!!

The setup for the infamous 2v2 bbal tourney in VT following distance nationals

Another view, if it looks 40 degrees and rainy, that's cause it was

Double elimination bracketing, not an easy task!

It is important to recharge the system

It is imoportant to recharge the system....and in some cases, reboot entirely!

for a goldarn good time in Worcester. I dibs ringside!

Ah yes. A little weight lifting contest. Just friends of the family. As in bodly weight contests, the 15 pound
underpants handicap rule is always in effect. Plus a few others….

So here are the new rules. You get to add 3 pounds for every year you are over 25 to the actual total sum of weight that you can actually hoist. A very honorable handicap that certainly seems fair to all. So if Sten is 19, he can add exactly no extra weight. Neither can Gus.

Uncle Nick, on the other hand, sort of likes his chances, in that he easily can now snap 95 pounds right up over his head, stagger backwards with it, and put it right through the glass window that overlooks the YMCA racketball courts. They make me lift in the middle of the mat now. But 95 plus 3 x 45 = 230, which should just about make me the big winner…..

I bet ski coaches get all the hot women. I would like to read more about that subject on this coaches blog. Us big fans need hot tips to be cool like ski coaches, who, as I just noted, get all the hot women.
We will have more questions later.

Sorry in advance to the CXC community. It seems some of my uncles have found my blog work, things only go down from here, believe me. I’ve had to change my phone number 3 times and I wear fake mustaches to family reunions but this, we all might have to endure.

    May Camp

We just completed our first training camp of the year and now training for next season has really begun in earnest.   Our May camp started at Jim Mullen’s Premiere Physical Medicine Wellness Center for VO2 testing and a flexibility assessment.  It is great to establish baseline fitness early in the season to know where we stand.  Tests throughout the course of the year will also help to assess improvement as we strive for higher and higher fitness during the year.  We also measure flexibility mainly to determine if the flexibility of any particular muscles were a performance-limiting factor.  This gave everyone an understanding of where he or she is tight and what should be stretched to potentially improve performance.

The next day Garrott, Brian, Bryan and I jumped in a local mountain bike race on trails developed by Brian Fish’s father.   Garrott and Bryan have a fair amount of experience but Brian and I found ourselves techniquely outmatched by other racers.  I could hammer to keep up but too many times I found myself off the bike and losing time.  Brian and I had a fun battle going on in which time was gained or lost on the other depending on who managed to stay up and incur the least mechanical problems through a given section.  He was able to put to me over the last few miles and we finished the 24-mile race exhausted and covered in mud.  It was an amazing experience made even more interesting by the snow and mud.  It was definitely a fun way to kick the year off and get excited to train.

Over the next couple of days we roller skied on the back roads of Wisconsin lake country around Hugus’ cabin where we were staying.  With the first over distance and specific strength workouts of the year under our belt it was great to ice in the lake and even get in a nice sauna last night.

It is time to start putting in the hours. Enjoy!
