Things I’ve Learned

I got hired as the CXC/Team Vertical Limit Elite Team coach on June 1. Obviously, there’s a bit of a learning curve when it comes to a new job, and going from working with Michigan Tech to here is no exception. That said, most of these things are mundane and esoteric and therefore boring to blog readers. Some of them are awesome, such as realizing that everyone on the team is really, really good, but at this point, it’s difficult to elaborate on that. And some of these things are slightly interesting, so I’ll mention some of them in this post.

+ I knew that pretty much everyone in the Midwest either does the Birkie or is related to someone who does it, but I was unaware that everyone knows Yuriy Gusev. This includes a guy who allegedly has worked as the mascot (“Misha”) at the Capital Square Sprints, who I met a wedding this weekend.

+ Tornado warnings: These actually occur. In Alaska and Colorado, these do not exist, and in Duluth and Houghton, Lake Superior supposedly keeps funnel clouds from getting too close. Eric and Santi — driving my car, no less — had to detour around Grantsburg a few weeks ago because power lines had been knocked down. A few days ago, there was half-dollar-sized hail and a funnel cloud east of Cable. I am very glad I don’t live in a trailer.

+ Speaking of living in a trailer, I am looking for a place to rent in Hayward. This is proving more difficult that I anticipated. My girlfriend is moving up here with me, so we’re looking for a place that isn’t too far from town — i.e., cell phones still work — which will accept a cat. If you know of one, let me know: jason.cork@cxcskiing.org. As much as I enjoy living with Santi and Eric, I’d like to unpack my stuff.

+ I haven’t really learned this, but included in the list of things which are still packed is my camera. I feel vaguely obligated to include a photo with my post, so here is a picture of my nephews Miles and Henry [stolen from from my brother and his wife's blog]:

I’ll try to come up with more relevant photos the next time I blog, I swear.
