    Big News!!!

    Hi everyone!

While traveling, training, racing, working, and planning too much time has passed since the last time I blogged.  Santi and I have been working like crazy to plan one big adventure for this spring.  We are very excited to announce that after this year’s Great American Birkebeiner the two of us will drive down to Charleston, South Carolina to start our Ski Across America (roller ski that is).  We will be skiing from Charleston, South Carolina to San Francisco, California to raise funds for the organization Food for the Poor.  With only a few weeks to go until the start of the journey we are waiting to hear from sponsors, planning our fund raising stops, and tying up loose ends. We would like to give a big thank you shout out to V2 roller skis for being our trip roller ski sponsor!

Please be sure to check out our website at http://www.skiacrossamerica.com and Like us on Facebook (Ski Across America).   We both love to ski and we are very thankful for all the wonderful generosity that has been shared with us.  We feel that its time for us to do the same and help others who need it.  We would like to share a bit of food for thought with everyone regarding our journey and its mission. We found out that one U.S. dollar can feed a child for ten days in an impoverished country, and $36 can feed a child for a year.  Therefore, it is our goal to raise $36 for every mile we ski in hopes of raising $108,000, enough to feed 3,000 children for a year.  Any financial donation you can provide to the cause is greatly appreciated.

Thank you and happy skiing to everyone!

    Ladies Night at New Moon

(Carolyn Ocariz) Last week I had the privilege to join Hayward’s New Moon ski shop for their ladies night to kick of the cross-country ski season.  The evening was filled with friends, treats, prizes, equipment fittings, and a bunch of great deals. It was a wonderful opportunity for women to come together and ask questions about gear and products for the upcoming ski season, while enjoying each other’s company.  New Moon also provided discounts off of purchases with a donation to the Hayward Area Food Shelf for their Thanksgiving baskets. They will also be putting on another ladies night in the beginning of spring to kick off the biking season!!

    Adventures in Utah

    By: Carolyn Ocariz

We just finished our first week training out in Utah and while here we have experienced both fall and winter. The week started with fresh cool crisp fall weather and eventually turned into perfect snowball fight conditions. The training has been great and a big thanks goes to Dave Knoop for his wonderful generosity in letting us stay with him.

Sara, Jennie, and I out on a double pole workout.

Santi and Nordic Dave after a mountain adventure.

Santi made a new friend after our hike.

Tomorrow we celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving with our friends from Canada. I know the team is excited for two Thanksgivings in one year!

    Here Comes Fall

    By: Carolyn Ocariz

As summer comes to an end, this means ski season is right around the corner. Santi and I headed back to visit our friends on the Ashland/Washburn ski team. They are looking great and are super excited for the coming ski season. At this clinic we opened up with a brief overview of nutritional information for athletes before and after their races.  We also tested them to see who had been working on their balance drills and moved then right into classical technique drills. We ended our session with a fun relay race.

Getting down the forward classic lean.

Also, with the start of fall this means cross country season for many high school runners. So we headed off to Spooner to cheer on Iciar and Katerin Ocariz and their fellow teammates in the Spooner invite. It was a pretty warm day but the girls ran very well and we look forward to watching them improve throughout the season.

It’s not always play and no work. But when working at the Rivers Eatery we do have a lot of fun. I have tried a lot of pizza from many places, but nothing compares to the pizza at the Rivers Eatery. It is hands down my favorite!

Finally who could forget that fall means football season and the Packers are off to a great start!

    Summer Clinics

It’s hard to believe July was here and gone already. So far August has greeted us with a continuation of the summer’s heat. Along with training and working at Telemark, Santi and I traveled to Ashland, WI for a ski clinic. At our first clinic with the Ashland/Washburn ski team we started off by working on goal setting. We helped them establish goal pyramids, with their main yearly goals at the top. We then discussed what they could do daily and monthly to try and meet those main goals, starting from the bottom and working upwards. After working on goals we went through some training methods, motivational techniques, and balance drills. After getting pumped up and ready to start working towards their goals, it was time to hit the road for some skate roller ski technique. The main focus was on getting the hips forward and keeping good angle flexion.

    Learning to get hips forward

    Working on balance

Remembering to get the hips forward

Our next clinic with the Ashland/Washburn skiers will be later in August where we hope to cover race day preparation, optimal nutrition choices for training and racing, and classical technique. As for now, we are in Marquette, MI enjoying the awesome training terrain they have here! At the end of the August camp Santi and I will be heading to Madison, WI for the Run for Snow races and are looking forward to what we hope will be some cooler weather!

The start of a new chapter and turning 23!

This summer marks the turning of a new chapter in my life. After graduating from UWGB this past spring it was time to really hunker down and get ready to be an Elite athlete! I am overjoyed to be a part of a great team and love training with so many talented individuals. Along with joining the CXC Elite Team, this summer marks one of the most important events in my life. On June 26th I married my best friend Santi Ocariz!

June was such an exciting time full of many great memories.

Now that July is here I have had time to organize, focus in on my training, and enjoy being Mrs. Ocariz.  After the July camp, Santi and I headed up to one of my favorite places,  my hometown Ely, MN. While there, we were able to get in some good training with my friend and long time coach John Kuehlman. We were put through one of his grueling workouts, the “Pipe Cleaner”.   Along with July’s summer heat the “ Pipe Cleaner” became an extra challenging workout. Lucky for us we were in the land of 10,000 lakes and could enjoy many refreshing swims in Burnside Lake.  While In Ely I had my 23rd birthday. To celebrate Santi, my brother, two of my cousins, and I decided to go cliff jumping!  It was a perfect day to be on the lake during the heat of the summer. Since then we have returned to Hayward and continue to train and work. Our next camp will start in less than a week.  We will head up to Marquette, MI and visit the great UP for some more awesome training!
