    Street Skiing

    By Caitlin Gregg

After a solid two weeks of training in Maquette, MI and Cabel, WI Brian and I returned home for what is going to be our longest time yet (3 weeks). As soon as we returned we began unpacking and getting the house up and running again. Within an hour the neighborhood kids saw Lahti and knew we were home. Ten kids  stopped over to say “hello” and “welcome back”. While visiting on our porch the kids saw all of our Marwe rollerskis and were really excited to try the “Street Skiing” they see Brian and I do everyday.

Brian and I began outfitting the neighborhood kids with our boots, rollerskis (street skis) and poles. The kids were psyched. We could barely get them to stop playing as the sun was setting.

Brian giving Quin a few pointers

Caitlin and the Girls trying out the sit ski

I find the learning curve for kids starting out on  rollerskis pretty incredible. By the end of the evening all of the kids where skating and striding without ever skiing before. There were a few crashes but the thrill of cruising around the block was worth it for them.

    Getting the hang of things

I love sharing my love of XC Skiing with everyone around me. Brian and I work with kids at our community service sites but it means a lot to me to be able to inspire and motivate the kids who live down the street. I can’t wait till winter comes and we can get them out on snow skis too!

    So Proud…

Earlier this season I made the decision with my coaches to focus on domestic racing and the Marathon circuit. It seemed like a good idea for many reasons. I would be able to take a step back from monthly training camps, I would be able to race closer home, and I would get the opportunity to be a part of the 2011 Junior Olympic Volunteer crew in Minneapolis, MN.

A goal of mine for many years has been to race and race for the Win at the American Birkebeiner. My CXC coaches felt this was a good plan and we designed my training and travel accordingly. As the season began my results were not as strong as previous years but I knew I would be focusing on the last week of February to have my “peak”. Racing at the Super Tours, Nor Ams and US Nationals this year was just as fun as previous years and it was great to see so many friends that I hadn’t seen since Spring Nationals.

When Nationals was over I was informed that my points were still low enough on the points list for me to qualify for a position on the World Championship Team in Oslo, Norway. I knew and the Team Selection group knew that I was still holding points that were from my pervious season. I felt strongly that as an athlete I knew whether or not I deserved to represent the US at Worlds. I spent many hours considering my training from the summer and fall, reviewing my races and performances from the season thus far and also looking at the girls who were just below me on the points list but were racing incredibly.

Sometimes points can be a good indicator of potential or success but sometimes they are not as accurate. As much as I know racing at the World Champs in Norway would be a once in a lifetime experience, deep down I knew that these Championships were not where I supposed to be.

I let the Team Selection group know my feelings and told them I understood the “points” challenge. I told them not to take me and to instead allow the girls who were behind me on the list but beating me in the races go. I wished the girls good luck at the World Championships and continued focusing on the Birkie.

I have had an absolute BLAST this season racing the domestic circuit. The Super Tour schedule is fun and brings you to some awesome places. I enjoyed racing in Minneapolis on the trails behind my house in front of a hometown crowd, I got to visit Aspen, CO a place I will certainly be returning to and most importantly I had the opportunity to compete in the 50K American Birkibeiner in Hayward, WI.

My training and racing went great and I found myself in top form on the morning of the Birkie. The deep freeze couldn’t even hold me back. I went on to win the race in record setting time in front of hundreds of friends and lots of family. It was an incredible event and meant so much to me. I will never forget how much fun it was and how great the feeling was coming down Main Street in first place to the roaring crowd. It was a perfect day and a perfect race!

As I was preparing for the Birkie and after it was over I spent many hours watching and cheering for the American girls (and the Canadians) over in Oslo. I have to say that as much fun as it was to feel like a rock star here at the domestic races, those girls are becoming rock stars in front of the World! With each race came amazing results from our women. They were nailing it!!! Having six out of seven of the girls on the team score World Cup points by being in the top 30 is absolutely incredible!!! (Ida I know you will be back to the top soon!) J I have never been so proud to be a part of American women’s Cross Country Skiing. Their results are the outcome of hard work, dedication and a fantastic group of youth and veterans chasing down new heights for all of us in the sport.

Diggins posting the seventh fastest time (and she is just a Junior) and anchoring the US Women to a decade best 9th place in the 4*5km World Championships Relay.

I am on cloud nine right now in awe of what they have accomplished. As much as I would have loved to been in Oslo I know that I made the right decision and I am now inspired beyond belief. I cannot wait to see the girls when they get back and congratulate all of them on their performances. More importantly I cannot wait to tell the story about what they accomplished to the up and coming women at the Junior Olympics next week!

Great Job Ladies!!! You are on track to something great in Sochi!!!

Inspiration and the other World Cup

While I was at work yesterday I had the opportunity to meet Jasmine Morris. Jasmine was at the Harrison Community Center leading a group of our kids in a wood-working project. The project was to build birdfeeders from recycled/ reclaimed wood. Jasmine Works for Elpis Enterprises. You can learn more about it here http://www.elpisenterprises.org.

    Jasmine before the kids arrived

“Elpis Enterprises (Elpis is Greek for hope) is a youth development organization focusing on youth employment training and small business education. Participants “work” all areas of the business and learn, earn, and profit as they go. Operating business enterprises include a four-color screen-printing operation and a woodworking shop that utilizes only reclaimed and recycled wood products. In addition, Elpis’ young staff conducts hands on workshops at its facility for youth groups from throughout the area as well as conducting community-building activities at offsite locations”.

Jasmine giving instructions for the birdfeeder project using recycled wood.

Jasmine is homeless but you wouldn’t know it. She has a passion inside and the motivation to follow her dreams. Jasmine is a member of the US World Cup Street Soccer Team. A worldwide event that brings the positive influence of sports to the lives of those who are homeless.

A group of homeless players has more inconspicuously joined the list of nationally recognized soccer clubs from Minneapolis. The YouthLink team — which is part of YouthLink, a transitional homeless facility for teenagers and young adults. This year, seven players from the club have been selected for the Homeless World Cup, which started on Sunday and will go through Sept. 26 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They include three on the U.S. women’s team, called the Lady Salamanders.

Jasmine Morris, 19, will represent Minneapolis on the U.S. women’s team. Morris left home two years ago due to conflicts with her mother’s boyfriend and played soccer for the first time with YouthLink beginning in 2009. Morris said she was surprised to make the U.S. team for the Homeless World Cup. “I’m so excited and a little nervous. It’s my first trip outside the United States.” She speaks eloquently and shares her visions about the future that have been shaped since joining the team. “This opportunity gave me a second chance. I am working hard towards a goal now and I know that soccer has helped changed my outlook. I continue to practice everday and give my all, with the hopes of earning a soccer scholarship to the University of Minnesota.”

    The building begins...

I left work yesterday with the greatest respect and admiration for what Jasmine is doing and how she does it. I will be cheering for Jasmine and thinking about what she is doing as my season starts in less than two weeks.  Sometimes inspiration doesn’t come from the Olympians you meet but intead from those who have nothing but the will to compete.

    Keep Hammering Towards Your Dreams!

    Summer’s Over!!! Time for Fall

Go! Training at the last Afton workout!

My summer has been the busiest I can ever remember. I spent most of my time working with the kids at the Harrison Community Center, as part of my In-The-Arena project, but I also had time to  get out and enjoy some training time with the Go! Training group and Piotr Bednarski (my hometown coach for many many years). I love training with this group because the workouts are hard the focus is high but we always seem to have fun!

The kids at the Harrison Community Center have been a blast. I worked with the Track Team on Tuesday and Thursday and in the Art Room on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The track team met in the firld behind the center and spent their workouts running around backstops and park benches trying to simulate a 400 Meter Track. I love this type of training! Last year I didn’t get to go to Whistler during the spring or summer before the Olympics so I had to find terrain here in Minneapolis that mimicked the course best. Of course I went to Edina!

Here we are at the End of Year Banquet. My car wasn’t running and I was up in Hayward coaching at the CXC Junior Birkie Camp but thanks to the gracious help from the Hanson family I was able to make it in time:)

The Community Center was able to score some tickets to the Twins Game in August and I was psyched to accompany the kids to everyone’s first time in the new outdoor stadium. It was amazing!!! As we left the lights were amazing and it reminded me of the opening ceremonies as we walked onto the stadium floor. Such a cool experience.

    The Twins Crew

As I mentioned my work at the park also includes working in the Art Room. I have a B.F.A. so getting the opportunity to re-connect with that side of my life was great. I realized how much I love art and design and it was wonderful, although sometimes challenging and messy experience, to share my love with the kids at the Community Center.

    Talent!

    The Girls' Mural

I can’t express how fantastic it is that the Harrison Community Center provides both an Art Room with Supplies and the Gym with Equipment. Sports and the Arts are programs that are being cut all over the country in schools and it is so important for these kids to learn new skills and remain active and express themselves in constructive ways like art. I have been working with kids who may never be able to afford to Cross Country Ski Race at the level I have but they listen and glow with excitement when they ask about the Olympic Games.

In front of the Harrison Art Wall

I think the greatest part of my Olympic Journey has been the last 6 months. More then the race or the places, the Olympic Quest is something that many people are intrigued and inspired by. I know while I was growing up it only took one slideshow from Marc Gilbertson to convince me that I wanted to put everything into making an Olympic Team and performing my best. I hope that for the rest of my life I am able to continue this message and inspire both kids and adults to give their all and shoot for the stars.

    My new Training Partner Rocci!!!

I haven’t left Minneapolis very much this summer which has given me extra opportunities to join lots of local training groups and attend fun events like the Ringer Roll held at Baker Park. While I was at the Ringer Roll I met a new friend Rocci! She is one of the most talented little skiers I have ever seen! This girl has got absolutely amazing techinique, a great motor, and even better an awesome attitude. Rocci and I will training together this fall and winter so if you are in the Twin Cities look out for us!!!

    Classic Skiing on the Coulee

Fall is in the air and I love it! I am looking forward to getting in a little more training and preparation for the upcoming season.  My car died almost a month ago and yesterday was the last time the Dodge will roll away. I have been biking, rollerskiing and carpooling everywhere which has been very environmentally friendy. Fortunately I live in a great spot for not owning a car because of all the bike paths and mass transit and I can do most of my training out my door in Theo Wrth Park.

    Goodbye Dodge :(

President’s Fitness Awards presentation at Bryn Mawr Elementary School

    bryan-mawr-president-5

On Sunday after almost 70K of racing in one week for the woman and over 100K for the men at the Birch Hill Cross Country Ski Trails in Fairbanks, AK the 2008/2009 competitive ski season came to an end. A lull in Mt. Redoubt’s volcanic activity on Monday gave my flight from Anchorage the opportunity to take off, just before the volcano spurted another ash cloud. This was the first flight to Minneapolis since the volcano began erupting a week earlier. I was so relieved when we finally got off the runway.

    bryan-mawr-president-2

On Wednesday morning I joined the second through fifth graders at the Bryn Mawr Elementary School to hand out medals and certificates to every kid who completed The President’s Fitness Challenge. Each student was required to partake in healthy activities and eating habits while keeping track of their choices for the previous 6 weeks.

The best part about Anita Chavez’s P.E. class is that she has almost all of them XC skiing during the winter! The Theodore Wirth and City of Lakes Loppet Trails run right through the school playground and the trails behind the school are where I train the most when I am home during the spring, summer, fall and winter. Almost 80% of the 180 kids in the assembly had skied in the City of Lakes Mini-Loppet. AWESOME!!!

    bryan-mawr-president-10

I spoke to the kids about my XC skiing training regime leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympics and how much I love training in the Minneapolis parks all year. We talked about many of the different parks in the area and all of the different types of activities we can do in the parks and on the bike paths, like running, biking, rollerblading, soccer, baseball and tag. The kids had lots of questions about Skiing, Alaska, Big Mountains and my new training partner Lahti the Husky!

General Mills was also an integral part of the presentation offering prizes and info about good healthy food choices. The kids did a great job answering the trivia questions about the food groups and serving sizes!

    bryan-mawr-president-7

I look forward to working more with Anita Chavez and the kids at Bryn Mawr this summer during their summer school programs and with the support of General Mills for the Tri-Loppet program that is being offered to the Anwatin and Anderson Elementary Schools.
